Connecting prisoners at San Quentin to the world via Social Media

San Quentin State Prison may be one of the most infamous prisons. It’s home to some of the most hardened criminals around and is notorious for having a culture of violence. What a day. I just found out Yahoo! is suing Facebook, and now I see that Twitter just acquired Posterous. Change is good though, so no complaints here, as change typically drives innovation.

Save money by syncing your Amex card to Twitter

American Express started a neat and new way to save money by using Twitter. If you have an Amex card, you can sync your Twitter account to your Amex account. Then if you tweet a hashtag (ex: #AmexBestBuy) for a special offer from that business, you can get that discount put back onto your Amex account given that you actually go and make that purchase.

Using geo-tagged tweets to map out city paths

Programmer Eric Fischer who likes to map data in interesting ways just finished a new project mapping out tweets from Twitter. Using public tweets from Twitter’s API that were geo-tagged in specific cities like New York for example, he was able to map out ‘point-to-point’ trips which show the most traversed paths taken by those Twitter users.

What the heck is happening to the Internet? It seems lately that it’s going to hell in a hand basket. Sure the Internet has always been a place where volatile things can happen, but it could be avoided on an individual basis. The most influential #SOPA voices on Twitter

Klout, the website that measures online social influence released their Most Influential SOPA Voices on Twitter, for the SOPA strike earlier this week. According to Klout, there were twice as many retweets about #sopa, #pipa, #blackoutsopa, #stopsopa, #blackout, and #factswithoutwikipedia on January 18 than in the past 30 days combined. In total, the amount of SOPA-related retweets alone were 765,924. In total, there were 2.4 million SOPA-related tweets on Twitter.
