Many may not remember, but back in 2010 there was an investigation from the WSJ which discovered that Myspace was leaking private user data from their web apps on the social networking site. Almost two years later, Myspace has settled with the FTC which says that Myspace misled millions of users, sharing personal information with advertisers.
When you talk about blogs and blogging platforms in 2012, you can’t help but also hear about Tumblr. Sites like Blogspot and LiveJournal are becoming non-players when it comes to blogging. After the changes Google made yesterday to Google+, it appears there was one more change that I just noticed. It looks like Google has gone the way of Myspace, Facebook and Twitter and is now allowing users to add a banner image to the top of their profile.
Ah, Myspace. You still remember them, don’t you? Hopefully so, it hasn’t been that long. So what is going on over in their neck of the woods these days? Well, as promoted back in January at CES, Myspace is launching Myspace TV and to kick start things, Myspace is going to exclusively air an original Fox TV series on the social network.
The wheels are in motion again it seems. I am reading all over the web yesterday and today how Myspace is on it’s way to making a come back and that Justin Timberlake is actually bringing ‘sexy’ back to Myspace. Really, is that so?
On a recent Google earnings call, Google CEO Larry Page said that Google Plus reached a new milestone. On the call he said that Google Plus now has 90 million users globally. Well over double what he announced just three months ago. 90 million total users is a high amount, given the age of Google Plus which just launched in June of 2011.
At CES yesterday Myspace and Justin Timberlake had a big announcement to make. Myspace in their journey to become relevant again has partnered with Panasonic to launch a new service called Myspace TV. Coming to Panasonic Viera Connect-enabled HD televisions later this year will be a full Myspace integration with their social element in another attempt to bring back users and have people communicate to each other while watching their favorite TV programs and using Myspace.
Earlier this month eye-tracking research company EyeTrackShop did a study on recorded eye movements on social profiles and the order of the eye movements were visualized with heat maps matching up to the corresponding social network showing exactly where people focus in on the most.
Each year social networking becomes more and more mainstream and popular as sites like Facebook become a household name. Facebook has over 800 million users, close to 1 billion. Once they hit 1 billion, 1 out of every 7 people in the world will be on Facebook.
Back in June of this year, Myspace was sold to Specific Media to get Myspace off the NewsCorp financial books and also as a last ditch effort to breathe fresh air to a social network that had fallen to the perils of other platforms such as of Facebook and Twitter.
In some news that I will categorize as awesome coming out of the LA tech scene, former Myspace CEO Mike Jones announced yesterday his new startup called Science Inc. Jones describes Science Inc as a technology studio for startups looking to grow in Los Angeles.
What if social media sites were your neighbors? Would Facebook be all that fun to hang out with or would it be Google Plus? Maybe YouTube is too loud and would be annoying? And who is that in the basement looking all lonely; is that Myspace?
This should probably come to no surprise to anyone. As anticipated today, Justin Timberlake held his private reception with top advertisers and brands with the new owners of Myspace, Specific Media on the new plans for Myspace. “MySpace is the future of social” said Timberlake. As Myspace gets back to social, it will also be getting back to it’s roots with Myspace Music.
Yesterday I had the rare opportunity to speak with Mike Jones who is the CEO of Myspace. I am calling it a conversation and not an interview as it wasn’t a scheduled interview, but more off the cuff conversation I had the chance to have with him.
