Enemies of the Internet
In the 1998 spy-thriller movie Enemy of the State starring Will Smith as the main character, he is being hunted down by government officials for information he has about a murder that was covered up. The ways in which the government used to find him, through surveillance, tracking and espionage is not a far cry from these Enemies of the Internet we have in today’s online world. And yes, this is a real thing.

What the heck is happening to the Internet? It seems lately that it’s going to hell in a hand basket. Sure the Internet has always been a place where volatile things can happen, but it could be avoided on an individual basis. Now it appears the places that we come together as a community to interact and socialize in places that have become sacred is evolving and changing at a rapid pace and is veering out of control.
You may have never heard of ACTA before, I know I haven’t. ACTA stands for the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement and due to the recent events and publicity of SOPA and PIPA, attention has been drawn to ACTA, which after reading about it appears to be just as bad if not worse than SOPA.

Internet censorship in the U.S. is still a real fear and possibility as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is still under consideration. The House Judiciary Committee was supposed to make a decision on it last week, then decided to post-pone until after winter break and reconvene in January citing they need more technical expert opinions before they can come to a vote. That is good news.
SOPA the Internet censorship bill veiled as an anti-piracy bill is at a critical stage. The House Judiciary Committee is probably going to make a decision this week on whether to pass it or not. If passed, it could have huge ramifications for anyone that publishes content across the web, including vloggers, bloggers and every day people that share things

Today is a huge day for the Internet. It’s not just about reblogging, tweeting and posting Facebook updates today. Today is the time to act, to keep the Internet free of bureaucratic bullshit and politicians trying to make the Internet a censored network for all of us.
