Happy 20th Birthday, Internet
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the World Wide Web (WWW) or as many know it as, the Internet. The Internet was invented by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. Twenty years ago on August 6th, 1991 the WWW went public completely changing history forever. The concept for a connected digital world had been around since the 70’s and probably before. Now the Internet has grown to become an every day part of society that many, such as myself, cannot fathom to live without.
The very first webpage ever published was nxoc01.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html which eventually was no longer served so the first webpage was moved to http://www.w3.org/History/19921103-hypertext/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html for historical purposes. As you can see the webpage is housed by w3.org or better known as the W3C. W3C is the web consortium which develops the standards for the web, such as HTML standards.
Take a look at some of the first versions of some of these better known websites. Aren’t you glad they have evolved into what they are today? These things were ugly!
