Sponsored Stories coming soon to Facebook mobile
It looks like after the Facebook IPO, Facebook has taken a hard look into generating revenue for the social network. They need to keep a steady flow of money and please share holders now that they will be a public company. Part of the IPO was that Facebook doesn’t post advertisements on the mobile platform. In order to grow, it was inevitable that ads may have made their way to the mobile site. However, it won’t be in the traditional sense.
According to the Financial Times, sources familiar with Facebook’s ad planning are saying that ads will start to show up as early as March in user timelines on the mobile platform, in the form of Featured Stories or Sponsored Stories. You may be familiar with this already if you use Twitter, which uses Sponsored Tweets in the user stream to display ads.
Initially it was thought that Sponsored Tweets wouldn’t go over well, but overall the response has been positive and a success for Twitter. Will the same hold true for Facebook?
Who’s to say at this point, but Twitter is not a publicly traded company and doesn’t face the same challenges that Facebook now has. Displeasure from users could really affect the value of Facebook once traded publicly. So it makes sense that Facebook may be rushing to get Sponsored Stories out on the mobile platform before the IPO is finalized which is scheduled to be in May of this year. Sponsored Stories is already on the Facebook full site, which just started in January of this year.
